Only one life will soon be past – only what’s done for Christ will last.
C. T Studd
My family just returned from an out-of-town funeral. I didn’t know the man well, who passed into eternity; he was a family member by marriage.
Funerals are interesting because it often a demonstration of how a person lived their life. The pastor mentioned how this man loved to garden and grow crops. This fact was reinforced by the overalls the man was dressed in, in the casket. He grew up as a farmer’s son and his life was lived near his family farm.
The pastor preached about the law of sowing and reaping. This man sowed seed and reaped what he sowed, giving away much produce because he planted much.
It was a very beautiful service where the gospel was preached; congregational songs are sung. It was a wonderful time of praise to God. It was a special day that I will remember!
At the graveside, the pastor mentioned a poem that describes our life as a “dash”. Not the mad dash we often live, but rather the dash that is on the gravestone.
The dash that is written between the day of birth and and the day of death. The date of our birth and the date of our death have little significance, it is the life we live in that dash. The days and years spent within that little dash.
Are we living our lives growing a crop of service for God’s Kingdom, or our own kingdom? Will the things we produce in our short dash be only wood, hay and stubble that is quickly burned up?
Matthew 6:19-20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
On this same trip I heard someone lamenting that their stocks had taken a downturn and they had lost money. I’m not saying anything negative about investing, but the only way to truly have a treasure that will not deplete is to store up your treasure in Heaven.
The story is told of a rich person who died. Someone asked how much did they leave? To which the other person replied, all of it.
If you invest your life and resources in the bank of Heaven you won’t lose. Whatever portion of your “dash” you have left use it for God’s glory and the incorruptible crown in Heaven. Make your dash truly count for eternity- no regrets!
God bless you and keep you as you ponder, only one life will soon be past…we are all temporary citizens of the time. Invest your time wisely.
