Psalm 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; And uphold me with thy free spirit.
Restore definition: Bring back (a previous right, practice, custom, or situation); reinstate.
David had lost the joy of salvation when he sinned with Bathsheba and had her husband Uriah killed. Sin separates us from God. He doesn’t leave us, but something is different.
Have you ever had a disagreement with a special someone? Things aren’t the same until you talk it over and apologies are said. Sin is like that, but more so because it causes a breach in our relationship with the Savior. David is asking God to restore the joy he once experienced. He wants to hear from God and feel free to talk to Him.
David wants to know that the Holy Spirit is still working in his life. He didn’t want to be like his predecessor Saul, when the Holy Spirit departed from him. (I Samuel 16:14).
We need to see these 3 verses (Psalm 51:10-12) as a whole.
Memorize them and remember them when we sin.
